Job Title: Kayak Lead – Don’t Mess with the Don
Hours: 20 hours/week, in-person (flexible schedule) Immediate until October 30th , 2025
Location: Toronto Waterfront (various sites)
Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and confident Kayak Lead to coordinate and guide recreational kayaking programs for youths and adults along Toronto’s waterfront. This role involves leading group excursions, providing instruction in kayak skills and water safety, and mentoring volunteer assistants. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator with sound judgment on the water and a passion for outdoor education.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead guided kayak tours to locations including Tommy Thompson Park, the Toronto Islands, and the Portlands/Mouth of the Don
Provide instruction to participants (ages 10 and up) on water safety, PFD use, paddling techniques, and kayak operation
Train and mentor kayak volunteer assistants
Ensure proper set-up, take-down, and maintenance of all kayaking equipment
Monitor weather and water conditions to ensure safe operations
Communicate with participants and assistants online regarding bookings, changes, and safety and weather updates
Qualifications:
Valid First Aid & CPR certification (current)
Experience leading group kayak outings (preferably with sit-on-top kayaks)
Strong knowledge of kayaking best practices, safety protocols, and risk management
Familiarity with the Toronto Waterfront and its weather, currents, and boat traffic
Excellent leadership and communication skills
Additional certifications (e.g., Paddle Canada, ORCKA, or equivalent) an asset
Experience working with youth and diverse groups is an asset.
Salary: $20 - $25 per hour based on experience
