Our Basic Canoe Instructor Course equips paddlers with the essential knowledge and skills to effectively teach the foundational principles of canoeing. Throughout the course, participants will dive into comprehensive training covering paddling strokes and proper instruction, various teaching approaches, theoretical concepts, safety protocols, and more. There will be ample time to practice teaching specific paddling skills to help you become a confident canoe instructor.
BCI certification is the foundation for all other ORCKA instructor certification courses (excluding the Camp Canoeing Instructor Course).
Course Schedule: Two Weekends May 24-25 & May 31-June 1 + Virtual Session
- Weekend dates, 9 am - 5 pm: Paddling, course curriculum and ongoing evaluations
- Virtual Session - Date to-be-determined based on your schedule
- Pre-course assignment due May 23

Key Highlights of the Course:
🌊 Candidate Canoeing Skills Assessment and Evaluation: Participants undergo an assessment of their canoeing skills to ensure competency before proceeding with instructor training.
📚 Theory: Explore theoretical aspects of teaching, including lesson planning, teaching environment assessment, experiential learning models, and understanding student needs and abilities.
🚣♂️ Practice Teaching: Engage in hands-on practice teaching sessions, developing and delivering lessons based on Basic Canoeing Level 1 through Level 4 course programs.
🎓 Learning Theory and Information: Delve into teaching fundamentals, techniques, presentation skills, and interpersonal communication. Emphasis is placed on effective lesson planning, equipment usage, and administrative elements.
Prerequisites:
- 16 years old
- Current ORCKA member (membership included course fee)
- ORCKA Basic Canoeing Level 4, equivalent certification or comparable skills and experience.
- CSP1 skills - this certification is not required, however, you must be able to paddle at CSP1 skill level.
